The Three Drives Pattern: Symmetrical Moves and Possible Reversals
The Three Drives pattern looks for three roughly symmetrical moves in one direction followed by a possible reversal. This guide covers its structure, Fibonacci ratios and limitations.
What is the Three Drives pattern?
Price makes three drives toward successively higher highs or lower lows, separated by shorter retracements. The pattern attempts to identify exhaustion and reversal, creating a broadly sawtooth shape.
Symmetry is central: practitioners examine similar price distances, durations and retracement proportions. The third drive's completion is interpreted as a possible exhaustion area, drawing attention from reversal traders.
Structure and Fibonacci ratios
Three Drives belongs to harmonic patterns that use Fibonacci relationships. Common reference ratios include the following.
| Segment | Common reference ratios |
|---|---|
| Retracement between drives | 0.618 or 0.786. |
| Extension into the next drive | 1.272 or 1.618. |
The guide describes retracements near 0.618–0.786 and extensions near 1.272–1.618. Repeated comparable proportions support the visual symmetry, although actual charts rarely fit perfectly.
Reading it with other evidence
Context matters more than the shape alone.
- Does the third drive meet support or resistance?
- Does volume diminish across successive drives?
- Is the market trending or ranging?
Confluence can strengthen an interpretation, while a strong continuing trend can invalidate repeated reversal attempts.
Subjectivity and limitations
The main weakness is subjectivity. Traders choose different start and end points and tolerate different ratio deviations. A pattern often looks clear only after completion, making real-time identification uncertain.
Reversals can fail. Even when the pattern appears convincing, define loss limits and position size. No pattern guarantees a future price.
Recap
Three Drives examines possible reversal after three symmetrical pushes. Use ratios, volume and support or resistance as context while recognizing subjectivity and failure risk. This is educational information, not an investment recommendation. Decisions and responsibility remain yours.
