What Is Wormhole (W)? Cross-Chain Messaging, Bridges and Past Hack Risks

Wormhole is infrastructure for moving information and assets between blockchains. This guide explains cross-chain messaging, the role of W and the risks illustrated by a past hack.

What is Wormhole?

Wormhole connects data and assets across dozens of chains, including Ethereum, Solana and Sui. W is its governance and ecosystem token.

Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, which are blockchains themselves, Wormhole provides bridge infrastructure connecting separate networks.

How does a cross-chain bridge work?

An ordinary network transfer stays on the same chain. Moving assets between chains requires a bridge or similar mechanism.

Smart contracts automate the process, but errors in code or failures in validation can put funds at risk.

Example Someone holding assets on Solana wants to use an Ethereum DeFi service. A bridge can connect the two without routing the transfer through a centralized exchange.

The past hack and what it illustrates

Bridges concentrate substantial assets, making them attractive targets.

WhenCauseScale
February 2022A signature-verification vulnerability allowed fraudulent mintingApproximately 120,000 ETH

The exploit enabled tokens to be issued without the corresponding actual deposit. Funds were subsequently replenished, but the incident showed how a bridge can become a single point of failure. Security of the underlying asset is not the same as security of the bridge holding it.

Risks to understand

Recap

Wormhole makes cross-chain use more convenient, but bridge risks remain. Before transferring, understand your wallet and private keys and confirm the official site.
