Private Keys and Secret Keys: Why Your Key Controls Your Assets

Private keys and public keys are among the first terms you encounter in crypto. Their names are similar, but their roles are very different. Failing to understand the distinction can cost you all your assets. This article explains how private keys, public keys and addresses connect, and why you must never reveal your private key to anyone.

Are private keys and secret keys the same?

In this context, private key and secret key mean essentially the same thing. The English term 'private key' is rendered in Korean using both expressions. It is a long, random combination of numbers and characters containing the authority to move particular assets.

Think of a private key as the only key that opens a vault. Whoever holds the key controls the vault. Unlike a bank, there is no central institution to restore access when you say you have forgotten your password.

The relationship between private keys, public keys and addresses

These are derived in one direction. A public key is generated from a private key, and an address from the public key. Reversing that process is effectively impossible.

ItemRoleCan it be shared?
Private key / secret keyAuthority to sign and send assetsNever
Public keyVerifies whether a signature is authenticMay be public
AddressFunctions like an account number for receiving fundsMay be public
Example To receive coins from a friend, you only need to provide your address. This is like giving someone your bank account number. Sharing your private key, however, is like handing over your bankbook, authorization seal and password together.

Why does the key equal control of the assets?

Crypto has a saying: 'Not your keys, not your coins.' It means that whoever holds the private key controls the assets. For coins deposited on an exchange, the exchange holds the key. In a personal wallet, you control it yourself.

If a private key leaks, assets can be withdrawn immediately. Once sent, a transaction cannot be reversed because of how a blockchain works. Anyone asking for your private key while promising to 'recover' your funds is a scammer.

Private keys and seed phrases

Private keys are long and difficult to memorize, so most wallets provide a human-readable 12–24-word seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase. It serves as the master seed from which multiple private keys are generated.

Safe storage principles for beginners

Understanding private and secret keys is the first step toward using crypto safely. Proper key management can prevent most of the common incidents involving asset loss.
