What Is Base? Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2

Base is an Ethereum layer 2 network created by Coinbase, a major US exchange. Its name is familiar, but its structure can be confusing. This article explains Base, why it has no separate token in the context described here, and points to watch.

What is Base?

Base is an Ethereum layer 2 (L2) network launched by Coinbase in 2023. A layer 2 processes transactions above Ethereum's layer 1 to improve speed and reduce fees. Direct Ethereum transactions can incur high gas costs during congestion; an L2 such as Base batches transactions and records the result on Ethereum to reduce costs.

Base is therefore an extension network relying on Ethereum security rather than a wholly independent blockchain. Final transaction records ultimately remain on Ethereum mainnet.

What being built on OP Stack means

Base uses OP Stack, open-source technology developed by Optimism. It is a collection of building blocks that others can use to create L2 chains. Base is a prominent adopter and, alongside Optimism, aims to form a compatible ecosystem called the Superchain.

Technically, Base uses an optimistic rollup. Transactions are initially assumed valid for fast processing, with a period in which errors can be challenged. This can create a delay when withdrawing assets from Base back to Ethereum.

Why does Base have no separate token?

Unlike many blockchains, Base had not issued a separate network token in the situation described by this article. Its gas fees are paid in ETH.

Example Be cautious about social-media or group-chat claims of a “Base coin” or “BASE token airdrop.” With no officially issued Base token in the context described here, such a token could be an unrelated project or a fraudulent token.

Ecosystem and uses

Several types of service operate on Base, including:

Relatively straightforward Coinbase account integration has led Base to be described as an entry route from exchange use into on-chain services.

Risks to understand

A clearly identifiable operator is an advantage, but also raises points to examine.

Base draws attention as an exchange-created L2, but no blockchain is flawless. Understand the network's structure and limitations before using it.
