How to Use MetaMask: Setup, Recovery Phrases, Networks and Swaps
MetaMask is widely used, but a single mistake can put an entire wallet's assets at risk. This guide walks through installation and swaps, with an emphasis on handling the wallet safely.
What is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a non-custodial wallet used on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. Non-custodial means a company does not hold your assets for you as an exchange does: you manage your own private keys. Convenience therefore comes with personal responsibility. The wallet types guide explains the differences between wallets.
Step 1: Install and create a wallet
- Install only through official channels: Use the official
metamask.iowebsite or the browser's official extension store. Search-ad links and installation files sent through messaging apps can disguise malware. - Create a new wallet: In the setup described by the guide, setting a password generates a 12-word seed phrase, or recovery phrase. The password locks the device's wallet access; the recovery phrase is the underlying key to the assets.
- Test with a small amount first: Make a small deposit and check sending and receiving before broader use. Choosing the wrong chain for a network transfer can cause loss of assets.
Step 2: Store the recovery phrase—the most important step
The recovery phrase is a master key that can restore the entire wallet. If exposed, it can allow all assets to be stolen regardless of the password.
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Write it on paper and store it offline | Save a phone photo or screenshot |
| Keep copies in at least two separate locations | Store it in notes, email or cloud storage |
| Keep it in a private, secure location | Enter or send it in a chat or to customer support |
Step 3: Add networks and swap tokens
The original setup guide starts with Ethereum Mainnet displayed by default. To use another chain, add its network.
- Add a network: Open the network menu at the top, choose Add Network, and enter verified details. An untrusted RPC endpoint can expose transaction information; for security, use values from official documentation.
- Swap tokens: The wallet's Swap feature exchanges one token for another. This incurs network gas fees and can involve slippage.
If network costs feel high, read about gas fees and Layer 2 for ways to reduce them. If you need an asset with less price volatility, learn what stablecoins are too.
Step 4: Defend against phishing and drainers
The original guide highlights drainer scams in which the user personally signs an authorization. A fake website displays a plausible approval request, and approving it without inspection can allow the wallet's assets to be drained.
- Before signing, read which permissions you are granting. Be especially careful with broad requests such as Set Approval For All.
- Avoid links using airdrops or events as bait. More methods appear in the guide to avoiding scams.
- The original guide's response sequence is to disconnect immediately if something seems suspicious, move assets to a new wallet, then inspect and revoke token approvals on the old wallet.
Safety comes before profit
MetaMask is powerful, but mistakes do not come with an undo button. Take your time with transfers and signatures, and keep the recovery phrase off digital storage. This is a tool-use guide, not an investment recommendation for any coin or service. Crypto assets have substantial price volatility and loss risk; nobody can guarantee future prices or returns. Learn enough to make decisions on your own judgment and responsibility.
