What Is VeChain (VET)? A Complete Guide to Supply-Chain Blockchain

VeChain uses blockchain to track information from production through distribution. This guide explains its enterprise focus, the distinction between VET and VTHO, and the risks.

What is VeChain?

VeChain began in 2015 as a project focused on supply-chain data. It uses blockchain to record authenticity, distribution routes and related information, such as the origin of luxury bags, wine shipments or temperatures along an agricultural supply chain.

Its mainnet, VeChainThor, supports smart contracts. It uses proof of authority, or PoA, with selected validators, unlike the mechanisms explained in proof of work and proof of stake.

Two tokens: VET and VTHO

The system separates the asset held for value from the token consumed by transactions.

VTHO accumulates when VET is held in a wallet and pays the network's gas fees. Separating the tokens aims to make business usage costs more stable despite fluctuations in the asset's price.

Enterprise and supply-chain uses

Compared with many other altcoins, VeChain places particular emphasis on business partnerships and practical applications.

Example Scanning a wine bottle's QR code could show its production date, storage temperatures and distribution history. Blockchain records make later alteration of that recorded history more difficult.

Risks to understand

Real-world applications do not remove these limitations:

Recap

VeChain combines enterprise applications with a VET/VTHO dual-token structure. Actual adoption, trust in the original data and market volatility all matter.
