What Are THORChain and RUNE? Cross-Chain Swaps and Their Risks
THORChain enables assets on different blockchains to be exchanged without an intermediary. RUNE is the native token supporting that system. This guide explains its operation and risks beyond the familiar name.
What are THORChain and RUNE?
THORChain is a decentralized protocol for directly exchanging assets from different blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, without a centralized exchange. Ordinary decentralized exchanges usually swap tokens within one chain; THORChain specializes in cross-chain swaps.
RUNE is the network's native token. It is more than a payment method: all asset swaps are designed to pass through it as a central settlement asset. Node operators also deposit RUNE as security collateral.
How do cross-chain swaps work?
The core mechanism uses liquidity pools familiar from DeFi, but every pool pairs an asset with RUNE. Swapping BTC to ETH therefore involves two consecutive steps.
This avoids requiring a direct pair between every asset. A route through RUNE connects them instead. Each trade incurs a percentage fee, distributed to the pool's liquidity providers.
Liquidity and RUNE's roles
Liquidity providers deposit equal values of an asset and RUNE and earn fees. More pool liquidity supports larger trades with less price impact, or slippage. RUNE's main roles are:
- Exchange intermediary: All swaps pass through RUNE, connecting assets.
- Liquidity pair: RUNE forms one side of every pool.
- Network security: Operators bond RUNE to support honest operation.
- Fee settlement: Fees and rewards are distributed on a RUNE basis.
Risks to understand
Convenience does not remove the risks of THORChain and RUNE. Understand the following before using or investing in them:
| Risk | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Smart contract defects | Bugs or design vulnerabilities can drain funds; major hacks have occurred in the past |
| Impermanent loss | Changing asset prices can leave liquidity provision worth less than simply holding |
| RUNE volatility | RUNE is volatile, and a decline also affects network collateral |
| Cross-chain complexity | Handling several chains creates more failure points and operational difficulty |
Impermanent loss is especially easy for beginners to miss. As the relative prices of pooled assets diverge, underperformance versus holding can grow. Fee income does not always cover it.
Recap
RUNE is the central token enabling exchanges across chains. Exchanging assets without a centralized venue aligns with Web3 principles, but also places responsibility for understanding and managing risk on the user.
This article objectively explains THORChain's structure and risks without recommending a purchase or investment. Crypto is high risk and can lose principal. Research thoroughly and decide carefully under your own responsibility.
