What Is Tezos (XTZ)? Self-Amending Governance and Baking
Tezos is a distinctive blockchain designed to change its own rules without hard forks. This guide explains self-amending governance, baking and the risks for beginners.
What is Tezos?
Tezos is a layer 1 blockchain whose mainnet launched in 2018. Its native ticker is XTZ. Like many chains, it supports smart contracts and dApps, but its distinguishing feature is on-chain self-amending governance.
Many chains change rules through hard forks that can split communities. Tezos embeds the upgrade process in the protocol so it can evolve without a split.
How self-amending governance works
Protocol changes are decided through on-chain votes by coin holders, generally following these stages:
- Proposal: Developers propose upgrade code.
- Exploration and testing votes: Holders vote, and approved proposals are tested on a testnet.
- Adoption: After final approval, the change is automatically applied to mainnet.
Baking: Staking on Tezos
Tezos uses a form of proof of stake. Producing and validating blocks is called baking, and the operator is a baker. These are Tezos-specific terms for the general staking concept.
| Method | Explanation | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Direct baking | Operate using at least the required amount of XTZ | Requires technical knowledge and a minimum quantity |
| Delegation | Delegate XTZ to a baker and share rewards | Ownership remains with the holder; easier for beginners |
Delegation transfers voting and validation rights rather than the coins themselves, so coins stay in your wallet. Rewards depend on network conditions and baker fees and are not fixed.
Risks to understand
XTZ carries clear risks like other altcoins:
- Price volatility: A price decline can exceed baking rewards and reduce principal value.
- Lockup and release periods: Delegation or release may take time, making an immediate sale difficult.
- Baker risk: Misconduct or downtime can lead to slashing or reward reductions.
- Competition and ecosystem: Adoption remains a challenge amid strong competitors such as Ethereum.
Recap
Tezos is characterized by governance that evolves without a split and baking. A distinctive technical identity does not itself guarantee higher prices or returns.
This article explains Tezos for information and is not investment advice. Future prices cannot be predicted. Research thoroughly and decide only within the risks you can afford.
