What Is Pendle (PENDLE)? Yield Tokenization, PT, and YT

Pendle is a decentralized finance protocol that separates future yield, or interest, from deposited coins so it can be bought and sold. PENDLE is also the name of its governance token. This article objectively explains PT and YT, how the system works, and essential risks for beginners.

What Is Pendle?

Pendle is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol centered on yield tokenization. Normally, depositing or staking coins earns interest over time. Pendle separates that principal and future interest into two independently tradable tokens.

The name refers both to the trading service, or protocol, and to its governance token, which lets holders vote on operational direction. PENDLE holders can participate in policy decisions or lock tokens to participate in rewards.

PT and YT: The Essential Concepts

The key to Pendle is PT and YT. A yield-bearing coin deposited into Pendle is split into these two tokens.

TokenFull NameMeaning
PTPrincipal TokenThe right to redeem principal at maturity. Usually bought below principal value and redeemed 1:1 at maturity, a discounted purchase.
YTYield TokenThe right to variable interest earned until maturity, effectively a position on future yield.

This separation lets users choose the side that suits them. Someone seeking stability closer to a fixed return can choose PT, while someone expecting future interest to rise can choose YT.

Example
Suppose a coin earns about 5% interest over 1 year. Pendle can split it into PT and YT. Person A buys PT below principal value and redeems the full principal at maturity, choosing a fixed-return style. Person B buys YT, benefiting if actual interest during the year rises above 5% and losing if it falls. This does not guarantee an outcome; it is a trade on the direction of future interest rates.

How Pendle Works

Pendle runs its own AMM market, an automated trading pool, for PT and YT. The process is:

Smart contracts, or automatically executing code, handle these steps without human review. Pendle operates on multiple chains, including Ethereum.

Risks You Need to Know

Pendle innovatively makes interest tradable, but it is not risk-free. Recognize these risks candidly.

Recap

Pendle is a DeFi protocol and governance token associated with splitting future interest into Principal Tokens and Yield Tokens. PT offers a more stable profile, while YT takes a view on yield changes. Interest rates, smart contracts, underlying assets, liquidity, and price volatility all create clear risks. Before using it, verify maturity conditions, the underlying asset, and whether you are trading PT or YT. Reviewing tokenomics also helps explain PENDLE's structure.

This informational article explains Pendle and does not recommend buying, selling, or investing in any coin. Digital assets carry significant risk of principal loss. All investment decisions and responsibilities are your own.
