How to Back Up a Seed Phrase: 5 Principles for Safer Storage
A seed phrase, usually 12–24 recovery words, represents your wallet. Lose those words and you may never recover the assets; expose them and someone else can take them. Understanding backup principles is the first step in protecting your holdings.
What is a seed phrase?
A seed phrase, also called a mnemonic, is a set of 12 or 24 English words created when a wallet is set up. All of the wallet's private keys are mathematically derived from these words. The phrase can therefore restore the wallet on another device if the original breaks or is lost. Conversely, whoever holds the phrase controls the assets. The same backup principles apply across wallet types.

Why digital and cloud storage should be avoided
A common mistake is photographing the seed phrase or saving it in a notes app, email or the cloud. It is convenient, but should never be done.
- Malware on a phone or PC can expose entire screens and files.
- A hacked cloud account or leaked password also exposes the seed.
- Automatic backup and synchronization can copy screenshots to multiple servers without your awareness.
The principle is to record the seed phrase only on offline, physical media from beginning to end.
Offline and metal backups
The basic approach is to write the words by hand on paper, carefully preserving their numbering and order. Handwriting leaves fewer digital traces than printing. Paper is vulnerable to water, fire and time, so a metal backup plate is recommended for long-term storage. Engraving words on stainless steel or arranging letter tiles in a backup device can preserve them through fire or flooding.
Verifying the backup and checking security
Writing it down is not the end of the backup process. While the wallet holds only a small amount, test whether the phrase actually restores it, and check spelling and word order. Treat websites or messages asking you to enter the seed as suspicious. A legitimate wallet does not ask for it again outside a recovery process. Reviewing scam-prevention principles is also useful.
