1. What Is Internet Computer (ICP)?

Internet Computer is one of blockchain's most ambitious projects, aiming to decentralize the web itself. It was developed by the DFINITY Foundation, led by Dominic Williams, and launched its mainnet in May 2021. DFINITY researched the project from 2016 and raised $167 million from investors including a16z and Polychain Capital.

ICP's vision is bold: host websites and apps entirely on a blockchain without centralized cloud services such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure. While other blockchains focus on decentralized finance, ICP targets decentralized internet infrastructure itself. Social networks, messengers, and games already operate entirely on-chain on ICP.

ICP has a notorious price history: shortly after launch, it fell more than 99% from an all-time high of $750. The guide attributes this to extreme launch speculation and circulating-supply issues, rather than the underlying technology. Continued development has since helped it establish a distinctive position.

📊 ICP Key Facts

Ticker: ICP
Launch: May 2021 (mainnet)
Type: World computer and decentralized cloud
Total supply: Approximately 510 million ICP
Consensus: Chain Key Technology and BFT
Smart contracts: WASM-based canisters
Founder: Dominic Williams, DFINITY
Upbit / Binance: Listed on both

2. Core Technology

Chain Key Technology

ICP's most innovative technology is Chain Key. The state of the entire blockchain can be verified through a single 48-byte public key. It enables smart contracts, or canisters, to send and receive HTTP requests directly, allowing external API calls and website serving entirely on-chain. The guide presents this as a capability unavailable on other blockchains.

Canisters

ICP's smart contracts, called canisters, run using WebAssembly (WASM) and differ fundamentally from ordinary smart contracts. They handle both data storage and computation on-chain. While Ethereum contracts handle computation on-chain and require external systems such as IPFS for large data, canisters can contain the frontend (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), backend logic, and database entirely inside the blockchain.

Subnets

The ICP network consists of independent subnets. Each runs its own consensus, and adding new subnets as demand grows enables horizontal scaling. The guide cites more than 40 operating subnets.

The Reverse Gas Model

ICP uses a reverse gas model. The canister or DApp developer pays gas fees, rather than the user. Users can access DApps without worrying about gas, providing a Web2-like experience.

3. Bitcoin Integration: ckBTC

One of ICP's most notable achievements is direct communication with Bitcoin without a bridge. With ckBTC, Chain Key BTC, canisters directly manage Bitcoin addresses and execute Bitcoin transactions through threshold ECDSA distributed signatures. This is described as truly decentralized Bitcoin wrapping, without the central custodian required by WBTC.

💡 Fully On-Chain Web Apps

The guide describes ICP as the only blockchain able to host websites and apps entirely on-chain. OpenChat, an alternative to Telegram; DSCVR, an alternative to Reddit; and Distrikt, an alternative to LinkedIn, run entirely on ICP without AWS or Google Cloud. This demonstrates the potential for censorship-resistant internet infrastructure.

4. Tokenomics

Total supply is approximately 510 million ICP. NNS, or Network Nervous System, governance determines inflation. Staking ICP in a neuron earns voting rewards, with a selectable lock period from six months to eight years. Longer locks increase voting weight and rewards, with an eight-year lock offering approximately 14% APY in the guide. Cycles, which pay canister computation costs, are created by burning ICP, so increased network usage creates deflationary pressure.

⚠️ Check Before Investing

• ICP has a history of falling more than 99% from its $750 all-time high, following extreme launch speculation.
• Understand the liquidity risk of long staking locks of up to eight years.
• Check the DFINITY Foundation's token holdings and influence.
• The guide recommends keeping the investment within 10% of a portfolio.
