How to Use Bithumb: Registration, Buying, Selling and Fees
Bithumb is one of Korea's major cryptocurrency exchanges. This beginner-friendly guide covers registration, Korean-won deposits, buying and selling, fees and differences from Upbit.
1. Registration and identity verification
As a Korean exchange, Bithumb requires real-name verification. The process is:
- Create an account using an email address or phone number.
- Complete mobile identity verification through your carrier.
- Open and link a real-name account at the exchange's designated partner bank.
- Enable two-factor security, such as OTP or Kakao authentication.
The Korean anti-money-laundering and Travel Rule context described here requires a bank account in your own name. Another person's account or proxy verification is not permitted and can create legal problems, so use your own information. Also review exchange security and scam prevention.
2. Depositing Korean won (KRW)
After registration and linking your real-name bank account, you can deposit won.
- Open Deposits/Withdrawals in the app or website.
- Select KRW Deposit and transfer from the instructed account in your own name.
- Check that the deposit appears, usually within a few minutes, although congestion can cause delays.
An initial deposit may trigger a temporary withdrawal restriction to prevent voice-phishing fraud. This is a normal safeguard.
3. Buying and selling coins
Use deposited won to trade. The two main order types are:
| Order type | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Limit | Specify a price; execution requires that price to be reached |
| Market | Execute against current orders; the market determines the fill price |
See order types if these choices are unclear. Before moving coins to an external wallet, learn about network transfers and wallet types to reduce mistakes.
4. Fee structure
Bithumb charges buying and selling fees when trades execute. Rates can vary with coupons or promotions. Sending coins externally incurs a separate withdrawal fee.
- Trading fee: Proportional to the executed amount and affected by the applicable coupon.
- KRW withdrawal fee: A small fixed amount.
- Coin withdrawal fee: Varies by asset and network.
Rates change with exchange policy. Check Bithumb's current official fee information before trading.
5. Differences from Upbit
Bithumb and Upbit are major Korean exchanges supporting KRW trading, but their details differ.
| Aspect | Bithumb | Upbit |
|---|---|---|
| Partner bank | Real-name account at a designated bank | Real-name account at a designated bank |
| Listed assets | Exchange-specific | Exchange-specific |
| Fees and coupons | Coupon-based arrangements | Primarily fixed rates |
Partner banks, listed assets and fee policies all change, so compare current announcements and choose according to your needs. For an overseas exchange, see the OKX registration guide.
For safer trading
Once comfortable with trading, learn basics such as candlestick charts and support and resistance. Cryptocurrencies are highly volatile and can produce large short-term losses. This article explains exchange use for information, is not an investment recommendation and guarantees no return. Decisions and responsibility remain yours; begin carefully within what you can afford to lose.
