The Alligator Indicator: Reading Trends and Sleep with Williams' Alligator

The Alligator indicator shows at a glance whether the market is sleeping in a range or hunting in a trend. Learning the shapes formed by its three lines can help you distinguish times to act from times to wait.

What is the Alligator indicator?

The Alligator is a trend-identification tool created by trader Bill Williams. Its central idea is simple: markets spend most of their time sleeping, or ranging, and only occasionally hunt, or trend. Three smoothed moving averages represent an alligator's mouth: a closed mouth indicates rest, while an open mouth indicates an active trend.

As a moving-average-based indicator, it differs from RSI or volume analysis. Its focus is price direction and strength.

The three lines: jaw, teeth and lips

The indicator consists of three smoothed moving averages calculated over different periods and shifted forward. The defaults are as follows.

LineRolePeriod / shift
Jaw, blueSlowest line; longer-term direction13-period SMMA, shifted 8
Teeth, redMiddle line; medium-term direction8-period SMMA, shifted 5
Lips, greenFastest line; short-term direction5-period SMMA, shifted 3

SMMA means smoothed moving average, which reacts less to noise than an ordinary moving average. The forward shifts, together with smoothing, mean the indicator's signals lag price movement.

Distinguishing trends from sleep

Example On a Bitcoin chart, the three lines remain tightly grouped during several days of sideways trading. Then the green lips rise, followed by the red and blue lines. If they align green, red, blue from top to bottom while widening, it suggests the uptrend remains active. If the lines start tangling again, the trend is cooling.

Limitations and cautions

The Alligator is a useful trend filter, but it is not universal. Understand these limitations objectively.

It is safer to use it as a supporting tool and cross-check other indicators and price structure rather than trade from it alone.

Closing thoughts

The Alligator's value lies in helping identify when not to trade. Simply resisting unnecessary entries while the lines are tangled can reduce avoidable losses. With leverage especially, false signals in a range can quickly become a liquidation risk, demanding greater care.
