Dogecoin Explained: Meme Origins, Supply and Risk | NOONOO TRADING

Dogecoin, DOGE, is a meme coin created as a joke in 2013. This guide explains its name, supply structure, large price swings and risks without exaggeration.

What is Dogecoin? Its name and origin

Dogecoin, ticker DOGE, appeared in December 2013. Its name and mascot come from the popular “Doge” Shiba Inu image meme. It began as a joke or meme lightly satirizing Bitcoin enthusiasm rather than as a serious technical project.

Technically, Dogecoin runs an independent blockchain based on the Litecoin family of code, with relatively fast transfers and low fees. Early online communities often used it for small tips. Like Bitcoin, its price is volatile, and it is traded among other altcoins.

Uncapped issuance: a major difference from Bitcoin

A central point is that Dogecoin has no maximum supply cap. Unlike Bitcoin's fixed maximum of 21 million, a fixed additional amount of Dogecoin is issued each year.

With approximately five billion new coins each year, the percentage added to total supply, or inflation rate, declines as the total grows. The absolute number of coins nevertheless keeps increasing. If issuance, price and circulating supply are confusing, start with market capitalization.

Volatility and celebrity influence

Dogecoin is highly volatile. Its price tends to respond strongly to community sentiment and public attention, rather than only uses or fundamentals, producing frequent sharp moves.

On several occasions, a single statement or post by an influential celebrity caused a major price swing. This means one person's words can strongly affect the price. Weaker valuation foundations can make an asset more sensitive to outside stimuli.

Example A ₩1 million Dogecoin holding becomes worth ₩700,000 after a 30% one-day decline, or ₩1.3 million after a 30% rise. Such swings are not unusual for meme coins. They help explain discussion of methods such as volatility breakouts, but greater volatility also means potentially greater losses.

Meme-coin risks to understand

Before buying a meme coin such as Dogecoin, understand these risks.

Recap

Dogecoin grew from a meme into a coin with a large community, while retaining uncapped issuance and high volatility. A familiar name does not mean low risk. Understand an asset's structure and risks first.
