Three White Soldiers and Three Black Crows Explained
Three White Soldiers and Three Black Crows group three candles moving in one direction. The names can sound unfamiliar, but their basic interpretation is straightforward.
What are these patterns?
Three White Soldiers, called “three red soldiers” in the Korean source's color convention, consists of three successive advancing bullish candles. It suggests sustained buying over three sessions or chart periods. Three Black Crows consists of three successive declining bearish candles, suggesting persistent selling pressure.
Both are candlestick patterns that combine a sequence of three candles, emphasizing repeated direction rather than one isolated bar.
Recognizing the shape
| Pattern | Candles | Direction | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three White Soldiers | Three bullish candles. | Advancing highs and lows in the guide's typical illustration. | Possible strengthening upward pressure. |
| Three Black Crows | Three bearish candles. | Declining highs and lows in the typical illustration. | Possible strengthening downward pressure. |
Typical examples have substantial, similarly sized bodies and short shadows. Long shadows or progressively shrinking bodies weaken the interpretation.
Why interpret them as directional evidence?
One candle can be noise; three aligned candles can suggest sustained pressure. Near a low, soldiers may be interpreted as a rebound beginning; near a high, crows may suggest a downward reversal.
- Soldiers can suggest buying returning after a pullback.
- Crows can suggest sellers gaining control after an advance tires.
- Practitioners often seek increasing volume as supporting evidence.
Context and cautions
Shape alone does not determine the outcome. Location is often more informative than the pattern name.
- Location: Soldiers after an extended rally can lure late buyers; crows after a crash can reflect final capitulation.
- Overextension: Exceptionally long candles can precede a counter-move rather than continuation.
- Other evidence: Read support and resistance and the trend or range regime to reduce misinterpretation.
False signals occur, including reversals immediately after completion, much like a fakeout. Cross-check context instead of treating one pattern as conclusive.
Recap
Soldiers describe three advancing bullish candles; crows describe three declining bearish candles. They offer context about pressure, not a guarantee of future prices. Interpret them with location, volume and other evidence while allowing for losses.
