What Is Ronin (RON)? Its Background and Risks
RON is the native token of an Ethereum-related network designed to make blockchain games faster and cheaper. This guide balances its gaming ecosystem with the historical hack and structural risks behind it.
What is Ronin?
Ronin, ticker RON, is the native token of a blockchain network created by Vietnamese game developer Sky Mavis. Rather than being entirely separate, Ronin is a network connected to Ethereum, designed to process large numbers of game transactions quickly and cheaply. Trading game items directly on Ethereum can be slow and expensive in gas fees; Ronin sought to reduce those problems through a gaming-focused environment.
RON pays transaction fees, can be delegated to validators for staking rewards, and supports ecosystem governance. It is therefore more than game money: it is fuel for the Ronin network.
Ronin and Axie Infinity
Axie Infinity is essential to understanding Ronin. It popularized play-to-earn gaming, in which players breed NFT creatures and battle them to earn tokens. When its traffic surged beyond what Ethereum could comfortably handle, Sky Mavis built Ronin as a dedicated network.
Axie Infinity was central to the P2E boom in 2021, bringing attention to Ronin. This is a double-edged sword: Ronin's value is closely tied to the success of a particular gaming ecosystem. Declining game popularity can reduce both network activity and token demand.
The $600 million bridge hack in 2022
The March 2022 Ronin bridge hack is a crucial part of its history. A bridge transfers assets between networks such as Ethereum and Ronin. Attackers stole approximately $600 million, equivalent to hundreds of billions of Korean won, making it one of the largest hacks in crypto history.
Validator authority was concentrated among a small number of nodes. Once attackers gained control of several keys, fraudulent withdrawals could not be stopped. Afterward, Sky Mavis raised funds to compensate victims and strengthened security, including a more distributed validator structure.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Date | March 2022 |
| Loss | Approximately $600 million |
| Attack location | Ronin bridge, the connection between networks |
| Underlying cause | Excessive concentration of validator authority |
Risks investors should understand
If you are interested in RON, recognize these risks:
- Dependence on games: Value depends heavily on games such as Axie Infinity. A fading P2E trend directly affects the network.
- Security history: Despite stronger protections after a major hack, bridge and smart contract risks have not disappeared.
- High volatility: Like most altcoins, RON can fluctuate sharply, including large short-term declines.
- Liquidity and listing risk: Lower volume than major coins can make execution at your preferred price difficult.
Before investing in crypto, review scam prevention and tokenomics, including issuance and distribution.
Recap
RON powers an Ethereum-related gaming network that represented the P2E era alongside Axie Infinity, but it also carries the painful history of a major 2022 hack. Gaming dependence and its security record are clear weaknesses. Understand structure and risks before focusing on an attractive story.
