Rate of Change: Reading Price Momentum with ROC
Rate of Change, or ROC, expresses how far the current price has moved from a specified earlier price as a percentage. It helps visualize trend speed and strength but has clear limitations when used alone.
What is ROC?
ROC compares the current close with the close n bars ago. Beyond simply showing an increase or decrease, it measures how quickly price has changed over that interval.
If Bitcoin was KRW 60 million ten bars ago and is now KRW 66 million:
(6,600 − 6,000) ÷ 6,000 × 100 = +10, using units of KRW 10,000.
This means a 10% increase over ten bars.
Periods of 9–14 are common. Shorter settings respond more sensitively; longer ones are smoother. Studying related measures such as RSI and volume can deepen understanding of momentum.
The meaning of the zero line
ROC moves above and below zero, its central reference.
- ROC > 0: Price exceeds its value n bars ago, indicating positive momentum.
- ROC < 0: Price is below its value n bars ago, indicating negative momentum.
- Crossing zero: A move from negative to positive can support an assessment of changing momentum.
- Absolute magnitude: Larger readings indicate faster change; readings near zero indicate relative stagnation or ranging.
A zero-line crossing is not automatically a trade signal. Ranges can generate frequent crossings and false signals.
Using divergence
ROC can be useful when price and the indicator disagree, creating divergence.
| Type | Price | ROC | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearish divergence | Higher high | Lower high | Possible weakening upward momentum |
| Bullish divergence | Lower low | Higher low | Possible weakening downward momentum |
A new price high with ROC below its previous peak can suggest fading propulsion. It indicates a possibility, not a confirmed end to the trend.
Limitations of ROC
ROC is useful but not universal. Understand the following limitations.
- No RSI-style fixed range: It is not confined to 0–100, so overbought and oversold thresholds are not universal.
- Weakness in ranges: Directionless movement creates frequent false signals near zero.
- Lag: A measure based on past prices can respond late to sudden changes.
- Variable reference levels: Meaningful readings differ by coin and selected period.
It is therefore commonly cross-checked with trend lines, volume and support and resistance.
Recap
ROC expresses price-change speed and momentum as an intuitive percentage. Its zero line and divergences help assess trend strength, but no indicator predicts future prices with certainty. Indicators are supporting evidence for probabilities.
