Nonce Explained: Why Transactions Get Stuck

If a transaction sent from your wallet has remained pending for a long time, a number called the nonce may be involved. The name is unfamiliar, but the principle is simple.

What Is a Nonce?

A nonce is the sequence counter for transactions sent by an account or wallet address. On networks such as Ethereum, transactions are numbered 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on, with the counter increasing by 1 as each transaction is processed. It identifies the transaction's place in that address's sequence.

The number serves two purposes. First, ordering: the network must process transactions from one account in nonce order. Second, preventing duplicates: it stops the same transaction from executing twice, or double spending. Wallets normally populate the nonce automatically, so beginners rarely need to enter it themselves.

How a Nonce Can Block Transactions

The core rule is that a missing number prevents moving to the next one. The network cannot skip a nonce. If transaction 5 is stuck for any reason, transactions 6 and 7 must wait until 5 finishes, no matter how much gas they offer.

If exchange deposits, withdrawals, or wallet transfers remain unresolved, the cause may be an earlier blocked transaction rather than network congestion alone.

Replacing a Stuck Transaction

A common solution is to send another transaction with the same nonce. Only one transaction with a given number can survive. A new transaction using the same nonce and a higher gas fee can replace the old one and encourage earlier processing.

Most wallets provide Speed Up or Cancel buttons for these actions. Without them, advanced settings may allow a manual nonce, but an incorrect number can leave a transaction stuck indefinitely or replace one unintentionally. Manual use is therefore not recommended for beginners.

• Nonces are assigned separately for each account; numbers are not mixed with transactions from another wallet address.
• Even a higher gas fee will not process a later transaction while an earlier number is blocked. Resolve the blocked number first.
