Checking Smart Contracts: A Practical Verification Checklist | NOONOO TRADING

Before using DeFi, NFTs or new tokens, checking a contract yourself is a first step toward protecting assets. These checks can be performed without advanced code analysis.

Why check a contract yourself?

A smart contract is a program executed on a blockchain. Once funds enter it, its code governs what happens. Malicious code may steal deposits or prevent withdrawals. Rather than relying only on someone saying it is safe, make basic checks first, especially in less-established DeFi services or new tokens.

Step 1: Check verified source code on an explorer

Search the contract address on a block explorer such as Etherscan for Ethereum. Open the Contract tab and look for a green check and “Contract Source Code Verified.”

Verified means the source is available and matched; it does not guarantee safety. Dangerous permissions can remain in published code.

Step 2: Compare the address with official sources

A common scam substitutes a fake contract that looks like the real project. Obtain the address from an official source.

Official site or documentationUse bookmarks; search advertisements can be fake
Official social channels or GitHubLook for consistent history rather than only follower counts
Explorer labelsCheck recognized exchange or official-project tags

Do not use an address from a direct message or comment without verification. Deceptively similar addresses are common.

Step 3: Inspect approvals

Token interactions may require approval allowing a contract to spend a token. Unlimited approvals are common, but a malicious contract can use that permission to take the entire balance of that token.

Example Clicking “Claim airdrop” opens an unlimited USDT-approval request. Unlimited access to an asset unrelated to the token being claimed is a warning sign. Reject the signature.

A quick beginner's checklist

If any check raises concern, stopping is the most direct way to avoid that exposure. Verification does not guarantee 100% safety; risks remain without deeper code auditing. If suspicious, do not proceed.

This content provides information, not investment recommendations. Cryptocurrency can lose principal, and verification cannot completely remove smart-contract risk. Decisions and responsibility remain your own.
