Force Index: Reading Trend Strength Through Price and Volume

Not every price increase is the same. A rise without supporting volume has less strength. The Force Index combines price changes and volume to quantify the force behind a trend.

What Is the Force Index?

The Force Index is a momentum indicator devised by Alexander Elder. It combines how far price moved with how much volume accompanied that movement. Its central idea is simple: for the same price increase, high volume suggests strong buying pressure, while low volume suggests a weaker move.

The formula is as follows.

Example Force Index = (Today's close − Yesterday's close) × Today's volume
If Bitcoin closed at $60,000 yesterday and $61,000 today, with volume of 1,000, the raw Force Index is (61,000 − 60,000) × 1,000 = +1,000,000. A larger positive value indicates stronger buying force.

The raw value fluctuates sharply, so it is commonly smoothed with a 13-day or 2-day exponential moving average (EMA). The short-term 2-day version is mainly used for entry timing, while the longer-term 13-day version helps assess trend direction.

What the Zero Line Tells You

The most important reference is the zero line. The sign of the value indicates whether buying or selling force dominates.

StateMeaning
Above zero (positive)Buying force exceeds selling force
Below zero (negative)Selling force exceeds buying force
Near zeroBalanced forces and weak direction

A 13-day Force Index remaining above zero suggests strength behind an uptrend. A move below zero suggests weakening momentum or a shift downward. Combining it with support and resistance or trendlines can improve signal confidence.

Divergence: A Sign of Cracks in a Trend

A strength of the Force Index is detecting divergence. If price reaches a new high while the Force Index makes a lower high, it warns that the force behind the rise is diminishing (bearish divergence). Conversely, if price makes a new low while the Force Index makes a higher low, selling pressure may be exhausting (bullish divergence).

Divergence does not guarantee a reversal; it only suggests fading strength. It is safer to cross-check other indicators than to use it alone as a trading basis.

Limitations and Precautions

The Force Index is not a universal indicator. Understand these limitations before using it.

An extreme spike in either price change or volume can distort the value. In practice, focus on changes in direction and flow rather than the absolute number. Other momentum indicators such as RSI can provide complementary information.

Final Thoughts

The Force Index combines volume with price to reveal strength that price alone cannot show. Use the zero line to assess buying versus selling dominance and divergence to examine weakening trends, while making an overall judgment instead of relying on one indicator.
