What is Theta?

Theta is a blockchain project intended to create a decentralized video-streaming and content-delivery network, or CDN. Services such as YouTube and Netflix use extensive server networks to deliver uninterrupted video worldwide, incurring substantial bandwidth costs.

Theta's idea is to borrow viewers' spare bandwidth and computing resources so nearby participants relay video segments to one another. Participants receive tokens for sharing resources. The aim is to spread a central server's workload across a participant network and reduce costs.

Two tokens: THETA and TFUEL

The ecosystem uses a potentially confusing dual-token structure, with distinct roles.

How are rewards generated?

Edge-node operators share bandwidth and receive TFUEL for relaying video to others. Validator and guardian nodes holding THETA participate in network operations and earn rewards, in a concept similar to staking.

Example While A watches a video, spare bandwidth on A's computer relays segments to B in a nearby area. A receives a small TFUEL reward. If many users do this simultaneously, traffic concentrated on a central server decreases.

Risks to understand

Do not focus only on the benefits. Consider these risks as well:

Uncertain adoption: A strong technical idea does not create token demand unless services and users adopt it.
Competition: Large CDN companies already dominate video delivery.
Price volatility: Both THETA and TFUEL can fluctuate sharply in the short term.
Token confusion: Misunderstanding the two roles can lead to trading the wrong token. Check the ticker first.
General crypto risks: Regulation, delisting, hacks and discontinued development are possible for any coin.
