What Is SOPR? Reading Market Sentiment Through Spent Output Profit Ratio
SOPR shows whether coins that moved on-chain were transferred at a profit or loss relative to their earlier movement. The reference level of 1 helps interpret aggregate participant behavior.
What is SOPR?
SOPR stands for Spent Output Profit Ratio. This on-chain analysis measure compares the value of coins actually transferred on the blockchain with their value when previously acquired or moved.
The basic comparison divides the price at the current movement by the price when those coins last moved.
Interpretation around 1
1 is the key reference, representing breakeven between the earlier and current values.
| SOPR | Meaning | Aggregate condition |
|---|---|---|
| Above 1 | Profit realization predominates | Coins move at a gain on average |
| Near 1 | Near breakeven | Gains and losses balance, with unclear direction |
| Below 1 | Loss realization predominates | Coins move at a loss on average |
SOPR often stays above 1 during prolonged advances and falls below it during plunges or fear. Combining it with the Fear and Greed Index or volume gives clearer context.
A tool for reading sentiment
Its appeal is showing the profit or loss position of coins that actually moved. A price chart describes the price; SOPR adds whether those movements occurred above or below earlier values.
- Profit-taking pressure: High readings can indicate concentrated realization of gains.
- Capitulation: Deep readings below 1 can indicate many movements at a loss.
- Sentiment recovery: Moving back above 1 can suggest diminishing loss realization.
Variants such as LTH-SOPR for long-term holders and STH-SOPR for short-term holders allow more detailed analysis by holding period.
Limitations
SOPR is useful but has clear limitations.
- Historical data: It aggregates movements that already occurred and does not reveal future prices.
- Noise: Internal exchange settlements or wallet reorganizations may not be actual sales and can distort the reading.
- Standalone interpretation: Cross-check with volume and support and resistance.
- Differences by asset: It is most established for Bitcoin; data quality may be weaker elsewhere.
SOPR is a reference for aggregate behavior, not a definitive buy or sell signal.
Recap
SOPR compares the value of moved coins with their previous value around a reference of 1. Above 1 suggests profit realization; below 1 suggests losses. It adds sentiment context but should be combined with other indicators because of lag and noise.
