What Is the Schaff Trend Cycle (STC)? Interpretation and Applications
The Schaff Trend Cycle combines MACD's trend detection with stochastic cycle sensitivity to identify directional changes earlier than conventional trend indicators.
What is the Schaff Trend Cycle?
Trader Doug Schaff developed the Schaff Trend Cycle, or STC. It combines MACD's directional information with stochastic calculations' faster cycle response. Readings range from 0 to 100, commonly interpreted as oversold below 25 and overbought above 75.
Ordinary MACD can lag price changes. STC applies stochastic calculations twice with smoothing, turning that trend information into a smoother, more responsive curve. It is intended for users seeking trend information with less delay.
How is it calculated?
Understanding the structure is sufficient without memorizing the formula.
| Stage | Process |
|---|---|
| 1 | Calculate MACD from the difference between short and long moving averages |
| 2 | Apply a stochastic %K calculation to MACD |
| 3 | Apply stochastic calculation and smoothing again |
| 4 | Output the final STC line normalized to 0–100 |
The double smoothing aims to reduce small fluctuations while showing direction changes quickly.
How to interpret it
- Cross above 25: Possible weakening of a downtrend and an upward turn.
- Cross below 75: Possible weakening of an uptrend and a downward turn.
- Curve slope: Upward suggests positive momentum; downward suggests negative momentum.
Confidence improves when STC is considered alongside RSI, support and resistance and volume, rather than alone.
Limitations and precautions
Its speed also brings weaknesses.
- False signals: Faster responses can create frequent false breaks in directionless markets.
- Remaining lag: It still uses past prices and cannot know the future.
- Volatility sensitivity: Sharp crypto moves can send it repeatedly across the 0–100 range and reduce its usefulness.
Indicators support probabilistic assessment and do not guarantee returns or forecast prices with certainty. Leverage can accelerate losses, so define stops and remain within affordable risk.
