What Is Optimism (OP)? Ethereum Rollups and the Superchain
Optimism is a Layer 2 network designed to reduce Ethereum congestion and high fees. OP is the ecosystem's governance token. This guide explains the technology, token role and risks.
Optimism versus the OP token
The name can be confusing because it may refer to the Optimism network itself or its token, OP. The network is a Layer 2 solution supporting Ethereum's capacity. OP is primarily issued for governance voting on the ecosystem's direction.
How optimistic rollups work
Optimism uses an optimistic rollup. It processes transactions together on Layer 2, then records a bundled result on Ethereum Layer 1. This aims to reduce gas fees while drawing on Ethereum's security.
“Optimistic” means transactions are initially treated as valid, with a challenge period during which objections can be raised. The original guide notes that this can mean waiting around seven days for a withdrawal from Layer 2 to Ethereum.
The Superchain and OP Stack
OP Stack is open standard software for building Layer 2 chains like Optimism. The Superchain is a vision of connecting multiple OP Stack chains through shared security and communication standards.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Optimism | A representative Layer 2 network built using OP Stack |
| OP Stack | Open-source standard tools for building Layer 2 chains |
| Superchain | A collection of interconnected OP Stack chains sharing standards |
| OP token | A token used for ecosystem governance |
The role of OP
OP is not the base asset used to pay network fees in the way BTC or ETH is on its native network. Fees on Optimism are generally paid in ETH. OP's main uses include:
- Governance voting on ecosystem budgets and policies
- Community rewards and allocations supporting ecosystem growth
Supply and distribution can affect token value, so review the project's tokenomics independently.
Risks to understand
Layer 2 networks such as Optimism have their own risks:
- Withdrawal delays: The challenge period can delay withdrawals to Layer 1.
- Centralized components: The original guide notes that functions such as sequencing transaction order are not yet fully decentralized.
- Technical and contract risk: Smart-contract and bridge vulnerabilities are risks for emerging networks. Learn basic scam prevention too.
- Price volatility: OP's price can fluctuate sharply.
