How to Use OKX Wallet: A Beginner's Guide from Setup to Security
OKX Wallet is a self-custody wallet, separate from an exchange account, where users hold their own assets. Alongside its convenience, learn from the outset that seed-phrase management and checking signatures are central to security.
OKX Wallet is available inside the OKX app or as a browser extension. Unlike entrusting assets to an exchange account, only the user holds the wallet's keys. The guide warns that forgetting access credentials or losing the seed phrase can leave nobody able to restore access. This article walks beginners through creation, transfers, and the frequent risk of signature scams.
1. Install OKX Wallet and create a wallet
Install the official OKX app for iOS or Android, or the official browser extension. Download only from official stores and domains. Phishing sites frequently use prominent search advertisements to lure users.
- Create a new wallet: Open the Wallet tab and select “Create Wallet.”
- Set a password: This password unlocks access on the device and is different from the seed phrase.
- Back up the seed phrase: The screen displays a recovery phrase of 12 or 24 words. This is the wallet's real key.
If you already use another wallet, “Import Wallet” lets you import it using the existing seed phrase. Learning the basics of self-custody first makes the process easier to understand.
2. Store the seed phrase safely: most of the security work
If the seed phrase is exposed, treat the assets as compromised. Follow these principles.
- Record it offline: Write it on paper or a metal plate and store it physically.
- Avoid digital storage: Never store it in KakaoTalk, notes apps, photos, the cloud, or email. Screenshots are risky too.
- Reject requests to enter it: The guide warns that websites, apps, or support staff requesting the full seed phrase are scams.
- Consider separate storage locations: If possible, keep at least two copies in different secure places.
For large amounts, using a connected hardware-wallet arrangement that keeps the seed phrase isolated from the internet offers an additional layer of security.
3. Add networks and tokens
OKX Wallet supports multiple chains, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and Polygon. Networks missing from the list can be added manually.
Add a network
- Select “Add Custom Network” in settings.
- Enter the network name, RPC URL, chain ID, and symbol. Obtain these details only from official documentation.
Add a token
A token missing from the wallet display can be added by contract address. Copy the address from an official or trusted source; fake tokens sharing the same name are common. Adding a token does not establish its value, and leaving unknown airdropped tokens alone is safer than interacting casually with them.
4. Receive and send
Transfers are straightforward, but one mistake can cause a loss.
- Receive: Select the asset and network under “Receive” to display an address and QR code. Confirm that the sender uses the same network.
- Send: Enter the recipient address, network, and amount. Compare the beginning and end of the address again. For a new recipient, the guide recommends a small test transfer before the main transfer.
- Network mismatch: Sending to an address on the wrong network can cause permanent asset loss.
- Gas fees: Transfers require the chain's native token, such as ETH or BNB, to pay fees.
If movements between the exchange account and wallet are confusing, also review cryptocurrency deposit and withdrawal fundamentals.
5. Avoid signature scams: an essential habit
The guide describes malicious signatures, rather than leaked seed phrases, as the source of most recent asset thefts. Connecting a wallet to a dApp can produce a signature request. Approving it without reading may hand over broad authority to withdraw assets.
- Inspect approvals: Be especially cautious about signatures requesting unlimited withdrawal permission.
- Verify the source: Reject signatures from unfamiliar links or sites received through direct messages.
- Review and revoke permissions: Check token approvals periodically and revoke unused permissions.
- Separate wallets: Keeping experimental and storage wallets separate can limit damage.

Practical recap
Install OKX Wallet through official channels, store the seed phrase offline, double-check addresses and networks before transfers, and read every signature before approving it. Building these four habits helps beginners use the wallet more safely.
A brief caution: Self-custody places full responsibility for keys and signatures on you, and lost recovery access may be unrecoverable. No tool guarantees asset value or returns.
