NEO Explained: Smart Contracts and the NEO–GAS Token Structure

NEO, often called “Chinese Ethereum,” is a platform coin supporting smart contracts. This guide examines the nickname, its distinctive NEO–GAS dual-token structure, and the risks to understand.

What is NEO, and why is it called Chinese Ethereum?

NEO is a blockchain platform that began as AntShares in 2014 and rebranded to NEO in 2017. It enables smart contracts and decentralized applications, or dApps. These similarities with Ethereum led to the nickname “Chinese Ethereum.”

The nickname is a marketing analogy. It refers to the Neo Foundation's origins, led largely by Chinese developers, and similar functionality. It does not mean NEO is superior to Ethereum or replaces it. Ethereum's ecosystem and developer population are much larger.

Smart contracts and technical characteristics

NEO emphasizes developer accessibility. While Ethereum requires learning its own language, Solidity, NEO was designed to support smart contracts written in existing languages such as C#, Python, and Java. This was an effort to lower the initial barrier to entry.

NEO and GAS: two tokens

NEO's most distinctive feature is its split into two tokens. Understanding this structure takes you much of the way toward understanding the platform.

CategoryNEOGAS
RoleNetwork ownership and governancePaying transaction and execution fees
DivisibilityIndivisible; 1 NEO is the smallest unitFractional units are possible
IssuanceFixed total supplyDescribed as generated automatically when holding NEO
Example The guide explains that holding NEO in a wallet gradually accumulates GAS, which pays network fees. In this analogy, NEO resembles a share and GAS resembles a dividend that also serves as a usage fee.

Holding NEO in a compatible wallet can therefore allow receipt of GAS, while exchange custody depends on that exchange's distribution policy.

Risks to understand before investing

NEO once attracted considerable attention, but the guide describes its position as having narrowed amid competition from newer platforms. Consider these points objectively.

This article explains NEO's structure and does not recommend buying or selling any particular coin. No coin guarantees future prices or profits, and virtual-asset investment carries substantial risk of principal loss. Unsourced claims of “guaranteed returns” have a high risk of being scams. Verify information yourself and decide carefully within an amount you can afford to lose.
