NEAR Protocol: Sharding, Layer 1 Scalability and Risks

NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain that uses sharding to improve throughput and scalability. Its name is familiar to many people, but its differences can be confusing. This guide explains the network, token and risks for beginners.

What is NEAR Protocol?

NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain capable of running smart contracts and decentralized applications, or dApps. Layer 1 means a base network that processes and validates its own transactions rather than being built on another chain. Like Ethereum and Solana, it belongs to this category, and among altcoin projects it emphasizes scalability as a core identity.

The problem NEAR targets is straightforward: blockchains can slow down and charge higher fees as users increase. NEAR aims to address this scalability limit through sharding.

Sharding and Nightshade: the core of scalability

Sharding divides a large workload into smaller pieces, or shards, processed in parallel. NEAR's sharding design is called Nightshade.

Example A bank with one counter develops a long queue when customers arrive together. Opening four counters and distributing customers increases total processing capacity. Sharding similarly divides network work among multiple counters, or shards.

NEAR aims to increase throughput while keeping transaction fees low. Human-readable account names such as alice.near also make it more approachable than long strings of letters and numbers.

The role of the NEAR token

NEAR is the network's native asset. The original guide identifies these main uses:

UseDescription
Gas feesPaying for transactions and smart-contract execution
StakingDelegating to validators to help secure the network
GovernanceParticipating in network-operation decisions

NEAR uses proof of stake, or PoS. Users can participate in staking to support validation, but should first understand conditions such as lockups and price volatility.

Risks to understand

NEAR attracts technical interest, but like every cryptocurrency it has clear risks.

Before choosing custody, review exchange security and wallet types.

Key points

NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain pursuing scalability and usability through Nightshade sharding. Fast processing and readable account names are strengths, alongside competitive pressure and price volatility. This article is for information and is not an investment recommendation. No coin guarantees a profit. Research independently and make careful decisions within a level of risk you can afford.
