A Complete Guide to the Money Flow Index (MFI)

MFI is a momentum indicator incorporating volume as well as price, often called RSI with volume added. We examine its principles and uses through the 80/20 thresholds and divergence.

What Is MFI?

The Money Flow Index (MFI) expresses money flowing into and out of an asset over a period as a value from 0 to 100. Its main distinction is including trading volume, rather than price change alone. This is why it is often called volume-adjusted RSI.

RSI measures strength from the magnitude of closing-price rises and falls, while MFI uses money flow incorporating volume. It tries to distinguish a rise supported by volume from a rise without it.

How Is MFI Calculated?

You do not need to memorize the calculation, but knowing the principle helps interpretation. Usually based on 14 days or 14 candles, it follows these steps.

As a result, volume behind buying raises MFI, while volume behind selling lowers it.

The 80/20 Levels and Their Meaning

MFI's key levels are 80 and 20. These are usually more conservative than RSI's 70/30 thresholds.

RangeMeaningCommon Interpretation
80 or aboveOverboughtOverheated buying; watch for a correction
20–80NeutralObserve the trend
20 or belowOversoldOverheated selling; watch for a rebound

A reading above 80 does not mean an immediate decline, nor does one below 20 mean an immediate rebound. Strong trends can remain overbought or oversold for a long time, making trades based only on touching a threshold dangerous.

Practical Use: Divergence

MFI's most notable signal is divergence, or disagreement between price and the indicator. A new price high with a lower MFI high can mean that money flow is not keeping up with the rise.

Example — Suppose a coin makes a new high by rising from 100 to 120, while MFI falls from 85 to 72 over the same period. Price has risen but inflow strength has weakened. This bearish divergence can warn of a weakening trend. Conversely, a new price low with a higher MFI low may signal easing selling pressure.

MFI becomes more reliable when evidence is combined with trend indicators, Bollinger Bands, or volatility breakout strategies, rather than using it alone.

Cautions and Limitations

Because MFI incorporates volume, poor volume data can distort signals. Exchanges compile volume differently, so the same asset can show different MFI values on different exchanges.

Digital assets are highly volatile and can lose principal. This article provides information and education about MFI. It does not recommend buying or selling an asset or guarantee returns. Investment decisions and responsibility are entirely yours. Consider your investment preferences and finances carefully.
