Lido and LDO: Liquid Staking and stETH Explained | NOONOO TRADING
Lido is a liquid-staking protocol intended to make staking on networks such as Ethereum easier. LDO is its governance token. This guide explains the structure and risks for beginners.
What are Lido and LDO?
Lido is a decentralized protocol providing liquid staking. Ordinary staking earns rewards while committing assets, limiting other uses. Lido issues a liquid representative token, allowing users to seek staking rewards while using the represented value elsewhere.
LDO is the protocol's DeFi governance token. Holders can vote on matters such as fee policies and node-operator selection. Distinguish it from a token that directly represents staking rewards.
stETH: the core liquid-staking token
Depositing ETH with Lido produces stETH, a receipt-like token representing deposited ETH plus accumulated staking rewards. Rewards are reflected through the balance or value over time.
A user deposits 1 ETH and receives approximately 1 stETH. The ETH is committed to earning rewards, while stETH can be swapped or used as collateral in other DeFi services. The underlying asset is committed while its representation remains usable.
Reusing represented value is liquid staking's main distinction. See liquid staking for more detail.
How does it differ from ordinary staking?
| Feature | Ordinary staking | Lido liquid staking |
|---|---|---|
| Asset use | Unavailable during commitment | stETH can be used immediately |
| Minimum | Solo Ethereum validation requires 32 ETH | Smaller amounts can participate |
| Operations | Run your own node | Handled through the protocol |
Lido lowers the participation barrier and adds liquidity in this comparison.
Main risks
Convenience comes with clear risks to understand first.
- Depegging: stETH normally trades near ETH's value, but stress or selling pressure can create a discount. Selling it then can crystallize that difference.
- Concentration: Lido has held a large share of Ethereum staking. Concentration in one protocol raises concerns about network decentralization.
- Contract and operational risk: Bugs, operator mistakes and slashing can affect rewards and principal.
- LDO volatility: The governance token can move sharply with market conditions.
Recap
Lido is a prominent protocol making staking easier and more liquid, with stETH at its core and LDO governing the protocol. Depegging and concentration remain structural risks.
