GMX Explained: A Complete Guide to the Decentralized Perpetual Futures Exchange

GMX is a decentralized trading protocol for perpetual futures without a centralized exchange. This beginner-friendly article explains its structure, GLP liquidity, the role of the GMX token, and risks candidly. It is for information, not investment advice.

What Is GMX?

GMX is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange protocol. Unlike a centralized exchange, or CEX, such as Binance, GMX is a DEX running on smart contracts. A company does not custody assets; users trade directly through their own wallets. It operates mainly on networks such as Arbitrum and Avalanche, including Layer 2 infrastructure.

Unlike ordinary spot swaps, GMX centers on leveraged trading. Users can take long or short positions on assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum with leverage of up to several dozen times. The counterparty is a shared liquidity pool called GLP, rather than another trader.

How the GLP Liquidity Pool Works

GLP, the liquidity-provider token, is central to understanding GMX. GLP represents a basket of assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, and acts as the counterparty to traders.

Example — A trader opening a 10× Bitcoin long with KRW 100,000 is effectively borrowing KRW 1 million of exposure from the GLP pool to place the trade. If Bitcoin rises, the trader profits and the pool's value falls by that amount; if it falls, the reverse happens.

The Role of the GMX Token

GMX is the protocol's governance and utility token. Whereas GLP represents counterparty assets, GMX is closer to a stake and decision-making rights in the protocol.

Staking GMX can earn a share of the protocol's fees as rewards. Details such as token supply and distribution can be examined through tokenomics.

Risks to Understand

As a DeFi protocol, GMX requires an understanding of the following risks.
