What Is a Gas Limit? The Maximum Gas a Transaction Can Use

“Gas limit” appears frequently when transferring funds or executing contracts on networks such as Ethereum. This beginner-friendly guide explains the concept and how it differs from gas price and transaction fees.

What Is a Gas Limit?

A gas limit sets the maximum amount of gas that one transaction or execution can use. Gas is a unit of computational work on a network such as Ethereum. The gas limit is therefore the ceiling you set on how much work this operation may consume.

It is similar to deciding how much fuel to put in a car. You need enough to reach the destination; set the cap too low and you stop partway.

Gas Limit, Gas Price, and Fees

These three terms are often confused, but have different roles.

TermMeaningAnalogy
Gas limitThe maximum quantity of gas allowed for this transactionFuel quantity limit
Gas priceThe price paid per gas unit, quoted in GweiPrice per liter of fuel
Transaction feeGas actually used × Gas price = Final costTotal on the fuel receipt

The key formula is Fee = Gas actually used × Gas price. The gas limit is only a ceiling. Unused gas is refunded rather than charged. For more about gas prices and fees, see gas fees.

Why Does Insufficient Gas Cause Failure?

If the gas limit is lower than the work requires, execution can exhaust its gas and fail with an out-of-gas error. The difficult part is that fees for gas already consumed are not refunded even when execution fails.

Example
The original guide uses a simplified example in which a basic transfer normally requires 21,000 gas, but a limit of 15,000 is set. It describes execution consuming all 15,000, stopping, and failing, leaving the transfer incomplete while the fee for 15,000 gas is lost.

The guide describes setting the gas limit comfortably above the required amount as safer, because unused gas is not charged and is refunded. Raising the ceiling does not change the principle that actual cost depends on gas consumed.

Practical Tips for Beginners

Final Thoughts

The gas limit is a ceiling, gas price is the unit price, and the fee is the actual gas consumed multiplied by that price. Setting the limit too low can cause failure while still consuming fees, so the guide generally recommends using the wallet's automatic estimate.

This article provides information to help beginners understand gas limits and is not an investment recommendation. Cryptocurrency and network-fee structures involve volatility and technical risk. Check the guidance for your wallet and network before making an actual transaction.
