Elder-Ray: Reading Bull Power and Bear Power | NOONOO TRADING
Elder-Ray separates buying strength from selling strength. Treat it as a supporting measure of who is stronger now, rather than a tool that predicts where price must go.
What is Elder-Ray?
Trader Alexander Elder created Elder-Ray, named for the idea of looking into a market with an X-ray. Its central idea is simple: buyers, or bulls, try to raise prices while sellers, or bears, try to lower them. The indicator measures their strength separately.
It uses two values relative to an exponential moving average, EMA, that acts as a price centerline: how far the high extends above the average, called bull power, and how far the low extends below it, called bear power.
Calculating bull and bear power
The calculation is simple and commonly uses a 13-period EMA.

Bull power is usually positive; a value above zero means buyers pushed price above the EMA during the period. Bear power is usually negative, and a larger negative magnitude indicates deeper selling pressure. The values are normally displayed as separate histograms.
Practical interpretation
Read Elder-Ray with the direction of the EMA rather than alone. A signal means something different in a rising EMA trend than in a falling one.
On a Bitcoin chart with a rising EMA, suppose bear power remains negative but moves gradually toward zero. This suggests that sellers are weakening on pullbacks and can support investigation of buying opportunities within the uptrend. Conversely, shrinking bull power during a downtrend suggests that buyers' rebound attempts are losing strength.
- Divergence: Price reaches a new high but bull power remains below its previous peak, warning of weakening upward momentum.
- Zero-line crossing: Bear power turning from negative to positive indicates very weak selling pressure in this framework.
- Trend confirmation: Establish the trend from the EMA's slope before interpreting strength.
Limitations and cautions
Elder-Ray is useful but not universal. Remember these limitations.
- Lag: It is based on an EMA and therefore past data; signals can be late in fast markets.
- No guaranteed direction forecast: It measures relative strength rather than revealing the future.
- Weakness in ranges: Unclear trends can generate frequent false signals.
- Leverage risk: Increasing futures leverage based only on this signal raises liquidation risk.
Elder-Ray becomes more useful when cross-checked with tools such as support and resistance and volume.
