1. What Is Filecoin (FIL)?

Filecoin is a decentralized data storage network seeking to create the world's hard drive on blockchain. Developed by Protocol Labs, led by Juan Benet, it raised $257 million in its 2017 ICO, one of the largest of that time. Its mainnet launched in October 2020.

The idea is simple: combine spare storage worldwide into one enormous decentralized cloud. While AWS S3 and Google Cloud Storage depend on centralized data centers, Filecoin distributes data among thousands of independent storage providers.

The network currently has more than 25 EiB of storage capacity, thousands of times Netflix's entire library. By actual storage volume, it is the world's largest decentralized storage network.

📊 Key FIL Facts

Ticker: FIL
Launch: October 2020, mainnet
Type: Decentralized data storage network
Total supply: About 1.96 billion FIL
Storage capacity: 25+ EiB, the world's largest decentralized storage network
Consensus: Expected Consensus (EC) plus storage proofs
Founder: Juan Benet, Protocol Labs
Upbit/Binance: Listed on both

2. Its Relationship with IPFS

IPFS, the InterPlanetary File System, is a peer-to-peer file-system protocol developed by the same Protocol Labs team. HTTP finds a file by where it is, using its URL; IPFS finds it by what it is, using a content hash.

IPFS defines how files are stored and delivered, while Filecoin supplies the economic incentive explaining why people should provide storage. Filecoin is the economic layer for reliable, permanent IPFS data storage.

3. Core Technology

Proof of Replication — PoRep

PoRep cryptographically proves that a provider stores a unique copy of data. A provider cannot store one copy and pretend to hold several.

Proof of Spacetime — PoSt

PoSt periodically proves that data continues to be stored over time. Providers must submit proofs regularly or face penalties, or slashing. This prevents taking payment and deleting the data.

Sectors and Deals

Data is stored in sectors of 32 GiB or 64 GiB. Clients and providers enter deals specifying the storage duration, price, and other terms.

4. FVM Smart Contracts

Introduced in March 2023, the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) brought smart contracts to Filecoin. Its EVM compatibility makes deployment easy for Solidity developers and opens new use cases:

💡 Filecoin in the AI Era

Data is the new oil in the AI era. Training models requires petabyte-scale datasets, making secure, verifiable storage a major challenge. Filecoin is strengthening its position as a decentralized store for AI training data, one of its most promising narratives.

5. Token Economics

The total is about 1.96 billion FIL. Allocation: mining rewards 55% / ICO investors 10% / Protocol Labs 15% / Filecoin Foundation 5% / other 15%. Mining rewards are distributed gradually over 6 years without halvings. Providers must lock FIL as collateral, reducing circulating supply. About 30% of FIL is currently locked in various forms.

⚠️ Check Before Investing

• FIL has experienced a decline of more than 98% from its $236 all-time high.
• Check actual paid storage demand versus subsidy and incentive dependence.
• Watch mining rewards and token unlock schedules.
• An allocation within 10% of the portfolio is recommended.
