What Is Akash (AKT)? Understanding the Decentralized Cloud Computing Marketplace

Akash (AKT) is a decentralized cloud computing marketplace where people rent out and use spare computing resources—especially GPUs—distributed around the world. It aims to turn centralized cloud services such as Amazon AWS into an open marketplace built on blockchain. With the recent growth of AI, it has attracted attention as a prominent DePIN, or decentralized physical infrastructure, project.

What Is Akash (AKT)?

Akash describes itself as a “Supercloud”: a decentralized cloud computing platform. In a conventional cloud, one company, such as Amazon or Google, owns the data centers and charges usage fees. Akash instead connects people with spare servers or GPUs—providers—directly with people who need computing power—customers—through an open marketplace on a blockchain.

The central idea is straightforward. Many computing resources around the world sit idle, while others urgently need GPUs to train AI models or run applications. Akash connects the two with minimal intermediary fees. By linking physical infrastructure to a token economy, it belongs to the DePIN category, which is often discussed alongside DeFi.

How It Works: A Reverse Auction

Akash uses a reverse auction. In an ordinary auction, buyers compete by offering higher prices. On Akash, providers compete by offering lower prices instead.

Example A developer wants to run an AI image model briefly. Renting a GPU from a large cloud provider may be expensive and involve a wait. On Akash, multiple providers compete on price, sometimes making it possible to rent the same GPU for less. Actual savings and availability still depend on market conditions at the time.

What Is the AKT Token Used For?

AKT is the Akash network's main token. Its primary uses are:

UseExplanation
Payments and settlementThe base currency for paying computing charges and settling with providers. Stablecoin payments are also supported for more stable settlement.
StakingUsers stake AKT to secure the network and earn rewards under its Cosmos-based proof-of-stake system.
GovernanceVoting on network decisions, including changes to fees and parameters.
FeesPart of transaction fees accrues to the network.

Holding the token does not automatically generate a return. Rewards depend on several variables, including network usage, issuance policy, and market price.

Risks to Understand

Akash is an interesting initiative, but it has clear limitations and risks.

Putting It Together

Akash (AKT) is a decentralized cloud marketplace that trades spare computing resources through reverse auctions. Its connection to AI demand makes it a frequent topic in DePIN discussions. Its value nevertheless depends on real usage and its ability to survive competition, while price volatility and operational risks remain. When examining a new coin, consider how it actually works and its limitations alongside the theme. It is important to think about capital management before taking an excessive position.
