1. What Is Sui (SUI)?
Sui is a layer-1 blockchain created by experienced engineers from Meta's former Diem project. It is developed by Mysten Labs; the guide identifies Evan Cheng, formerly an R&D director at Meta, as its CTO. Mainnet launched in May 2023. Sui uses Move, like Aptos (APT), but adopts a completely different architecture.
Sui's most innovative feature is an object-centric data model. While conventional blockchains center on accounts, Sui manages everything as independent objects. NFTs, tokens, and game items each exist as separate objects, so transactions involving unrelated objects can be processed fully in parallel. This enables exceptional performance, especially for games and social DApps.
Sui raised $336 million from investors including a16z, Binance Labs, Coinbase Ventures, and Franklin Templeton. It has also attracted high volume and popularity in South Korea.
📊 SUI Key Facts
• Ticker: SUI
• Launch: May 2023 (mainnet)
• Consensus: Mysticeti BFT, upgraded in 2024
• Total supply: 10 billion SUI
• Finality: 390ms, below one second
• Smart contracts: Sui Move, a Sui-specific variant of Move
• Developer: Mysten Labs
• Upbit / Binance: Listed on both
2. The Object-Centric Data Model
Sui's most distinctive technology is its object-centric data model. Conventional Ethereum manages the entire state in one global tree that transactions must update sequentially. Sui instead uses these principles:
- Every asset is independent: NFTs, tokens, and game items are separate objects with unique IDs
- Parallel simple transactions: Transactions touching different objects can be processed immediately in parallel without consensus
- Only shared objects require consensus: The consensus protocol is used when multiple users access the same object
This design is especially powerful for games. For example, inventory transactions by 100,000 MMORPG players can be processed immediately without consensus; consensus is needed only when players trade the same item.
3. Mysticeti Consensus and zkLogin
Mysticeti Consensus
Introduced in 2024, Mysticeti reduced latency by 80% compared with Narwhal and Bullshark. It achieved 390ms finality, enabling effectively instant transactions. The guide describes this as faster than Visa payments.
zkLogin: Blockchain Access Through Social Login
Sui's zkLogin enables blockchain login based on zero-knowledge proofs using social accounts such as Google, Apple, or Facebook. Users can enter Web3 through an existing social account without installing a separate wallet app or remembering a seed phrase. This is a core technology for mass adoption.
Sponsored Transactions
DApp developers can pay gas on users' behalf, letting them use blockchain applications without bearing gas costs. This also aims to provide a Web2-like user experience.
💡 Sui vs. Aptos: Shared Roots, Different Choices
Aptos and Sui share Meta and Diem origins but chose different designs. Aptos combines an account-centric model with Block-STM parallel execution, favoring general-purpose processing. Sui combines an object-centric model with consensus-free parallel processing, specializing in games and social applications. Their competition tests which design better fits Web3's future.
4. Tokenomics
Total supply is 10 billion SUI. Allocation: community 50% / Mysten Labs team 20% / investors 14% / Sui Foundation 10% / community access program 6%. Staking rewards introduce inflation, with approximately 3–4% APY. Team and investor allocations unlock gradually from 2024 through 2027. Gas-fee revenue supports staking rewards.
5. Ecosystem
- DeepBook: A Sui-native central limit order book (CLOB) DEX
- Cetus: Sui's largest AMM DEX described here
- Turbos Finance: A concentrated-liquidity DEX
- Navi Protocol: Lending and borrowing protocol
- Scallop: An on-chain money market
- Gaming: Multiple AAA-scale game projects are being developed on Sui because of its object model
- SuiNS: A domain naming service using .sui
6. Investment Outlook
Positive Factors
- An object model optimized for games and social applications, presented as a distinctive competitive design
- Potential to onboard large numbers of Web2 users through zkLogin
- 390ms finality, described as faster than Visa
- Mysten Labs' experienced development team
- High popularity and trading volume in South Korea
- Participation by institutional investors such as Franklin Templeton
Negative Factors
- Direct competition with Aptos, dividing the Move-language market
- Large scheduled token unlocks and price pressure
- A developer pool more limited than Solidity's
- An ecosystem still at an early stage compared with Ethereum or Solana
7. Risks
⚠️ Check Before Investing
• SUI has been highly volatile since token launch.
• Unlock schedules can strongly influence price; always check them.
• The outcome of competition between Move-based APT and SUI is uncertain.
• The guide recommends keeping the investment within 10% of a portfolio.
