Lost Your OTP (2FA) Phone? Recovery Steps and Advance Preparation

Two-factor authentication (2FA) greatly improves security, but losing the phone that holds your authentication app can lock even you out of your account. Knowing what to do in advance helps you avoid panic.

What Is 2FA (OTP), and Why Does Losing Your Phone Matter?

2FA is a security measure that asks for a 6-digit one-time password (OTP) in addition to your password. The most common approach uses an app such as Google Authenticator to generate a new code every 30 seconds. The problem is that the information used to generate the code—the secret key—may be stored only on that phone. Losing or resetting the phone removes your way of generating the same code, so you can be locked out even if you know your password. Preparing recovery options is therefore just as important as configuring your exchange's security settings.

First, Check for Backup Codes

When you first enable 2FA, an exchange or service will usually show you 8–10 backup codes, also called recovery codes, once. A single code lets you sign in without the OTP app. Even if your phone is lost, recovery can take only a few minutes if you saved those codes on paper or in a password manager.

Example A user loses the phone containing their OTP app, but they wrote the backup codes on paper when signing up and kept the paper in a drawer, rather than in a notes app. They select “Can't use your OTP?” on the login screen, enter one backup code, sign in, and immediately register 2FA again on their new phone.

Recovery When You Have No Backup Codes

If your backup codes are also lost, the details vary by service, but the general process is similar.

StepWhat to Do
1Open “Lost/reset 2FA” on the login screen or contact customer support.
2Submit identity verification materials, such as ID, a selfie, your signup email, or your registered phone number.
3Security measures, including withdrawal restrictions, may apply during the review.
4After approval, the old 2FA is removed and you register it on the new device.

Reviews commonly take from a day to several days, and withdrawals may be restricted during that period. For exchange signup instructions, see OKX signup or the Upbit guide.

Prepare So It Does Not Happen Again

Crypto assets can be stored in different ways depending on the type of wallet, but exchange account security ultimately comes down to whether you alone can access the account. OTP is powerful, but without recovery options prepared in advance, it can become a lock that keeps its owner out.

This article is for informational purposes and is not an investment recommendation. 2FA recovery policies differ between services and change frequently. When recovering an account, always check the exchange's official instructions and contact its customer support. Recovery may be refused if identity verification is incomplete.
